Episode 125 – Haydee Yañez and Gisel Barrett – Niños Book Fest

This week I had the pleasure of talking to two wonderful women who are giving independent minority authors a platform to showcase their work.  At the same time they are giving children of color the opportunity to discover books with characters who they can relate to.  My guests on episode 125 were Gisel Barrett and Haydee Yañez.  Gisel is an elementary school teacher and Haydee is a graphic designer who helps design childrens books, they do this as their 9 to 5 jobs.  Towards the end of 2019 Haydee and Gisel met in Barrio Logan at one of the farmer’s markets, the both noticed that even though the farmer’s market is family friendly there wasn’t something just for kids.  This is when the idea for Niños Book Fest was born.  They began with some small readings at a local cafe shop, unfortunately this little thing called COVID decided to show up.  They ended up doing Niños Book Fest as a virtual event and since then they’ve been doing weekly reading featuring independent minority authors and also doing some arts and crafts that feature our hispanic culture.  Their goal is to one day have their Niños Book Fest in person where you can meet some of the authors they’ve been featuring on their Instagram Live Readings.  I really enjoyed my conversation with Gisel and Haydee and I am grateful for the time and effort they are putting into this project because they are teaching our younger generations about all of the cultures that sometimes we don’t hear about.  Follow Niños Book Fest on Instagram, you can also follow Haydee and Gisel on their personal/business Instagram pages.  You can now listen to episode 125 with Haydee and Gisel from Niños Book Fest on Anchor, Spotify, Google Podcast and Apple Podcast.  You may also watch this and other episodes on our Youtube Channel.
