Episode 108 – Margarita Magallanes

In today’s episode, I had the opportunity to talk to one of the candidates for the board of trustees for the Calexico Unified School District, Ms. Margarita Magallanes.  She’s running for one of the two spots available and she’s running against two incumbent candidates to be part of this all-male board.  Margarita grew up and went to a couple of Calexico Unified School District’s schools but like so many of the kids in our community she was the daughter of migrant workers so she moved a lot during her teenage years following “la corrida” with her mom.  After high school, she set her mind on opening her own business because she wanted to be her own boss so she could spend time with her daughters.  Margarita has 4 daughters who all go to school in Calexico.  This is one of the main reasons she decided to run, she wanted a better future for her daughters and the other kids in Calexico. Something that Margarita mentioned to me that she forgot to mention on the Podcast was that she wants to make sure our kids know how to speak English and another language well, most of us feel like we know Spanish but she wants to make sure our kids know how to speak and write it the correct way.  Margarita feels that some of the things she’ll bring to the board are her motherly instincts, her knowledge in finance and bookkeeping, and her willingness to learn and do what’s best for our kids and our community.

Just a reminder that this Episode is not an endorsement, it’s just an opportunity for you the community to get to know the candidates.
