The pandemic has brought hardships to a lot of us but it’s also made a lot more people appreciate what we have and at the same time fight for those that might not be as lucky as some of us. Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk to two young Imperial Valley residents, Vanessa Kilps and Yomar Aguilar, who are part of La Familia del Valle, “A youth driven organization that strives to provide essential items to those in need among our community”. This group of young adults is made up of high students and college students from around the valley who saw the need to help out our unhoused brothers and sisters from across the valley. One of the things that amazed me about this group is how well organized and motivated they are, they have a research and translation team, a public relations team, a design team and you can see who they are if you visit their social media. It’s really encouraging to see these young adults come together and do something for the unhoused people in our community, especially since they understand that it’s not only about giving them material things or food but also to let people in our community that most of the unhoused were like you and I who at one time or another had a home and life took a turn for the worse and put them where they are.
