Today I had the opportunity to have a talk with Calexico city council member and returning guest, Mr Raul Urena. I first had the opportunity to talk to Mr Urena when he was running for the 2 year position for Calexico City Council, a race he won by a landslide against an incumbent. If I’m not mistaken Raul is the youngest person elected to a city council position for the city of Calexico and with that came a lot of support from the young citizens of Calexico. Raul has been really busy since the day he was sworn in to the city council, he’s been having a hard time getting his fellow council members pass some of his items one of the only things that he’s brought up to council was the creation of a local COVID committee, he feels that having a local committee who knows the needs of our community will help more people get tested and informed and bring our numbers down, it will also help take a load off from the county. The relationship between the council members is not at it’s best right now and I feel that might have an impact on Raul to pass anything that he brings to the board. Although these weren’t Raul’s exact words I got the feeling he’s banking on the fact that a lot of new young voters came out this last election to come out again when it’s time to elect a new city council member and vote someone who is not part of the “Old Calexico” leadership.
