Today I had the opportunity to talk to one of the 4 candidates for Imperial City Council, Ms. Katie Burnworth. Running for the city council is a big responsibility especially during a pandemic, but this did not stop Katie from running for this position. One of her biggest motivators was to continue to serve her community just like her late husband did as a firefighter. She also believes that if you’re going to complain about something you have to be part of the solution as well. Katie is currently in the planning commission for the city of Imperial and also works for the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District so she is familiar with the red tape and the slow pace of government. Although only 29, Katie is really mature for her age she is also very resilient and she attributes this to turning pro as a BMX racer at 15 were the boys she races against cut her no slack and treated her as another racer. With a bachelor’s in biology and a minor in chemistry, she hopes to bring her problem-solving skills to the city council and make Imperial a better place to live and to start a new business.
